Scene 1Narrator: Our story begins in (city name in India, we must choose which one we want to say), June 2005. Suresh Kumar is about to leave for a year studying in the United States. His parents hope that he will reform his gangster ways while improving his education.
Suresh appears before parents wearing gundaa (gangster-ish) clothing. Parents are middle-class, perhaps father is bespectacled.Father: [in a warning voice] Suresh, make sure you do not do anything to dishonor you family. Keep your mind in your studies and stay away from bad friends. Don’t mess up your life.
Mother: [in a gentler tone]
HA HA HA! *saunters off stage in his gangster style*
Father: My son, a budding capitalist! Just what the world needs!
Mother:
Scene 2Narrator: (city name in U.S.), September 2005. Suresh has had a few months to settle in in America. He finds he doesn’t fit in. He is crest-fallen at how little money he has. He tries to focus on his studies, brokenhearted.
Suresh appears sitting outdoors reading, presumably studying for school. A couple of American gangsters approach him.Amer. Gangster (AG) 1: [to AG 2] Hey look here, what a good student we have!
AG 2: He thinks he’s so smart! He doesn’t have time to waste on us!
AG 1: Is that true? No time to waste on us?
[Please feel free to improvise and make these lines authentic U.S. gangster style, adding “yo” or “foo’” wherever you desire.]
AG 1: Ooooh, he doesn’t want us to bother him! Take his book!
Ag 2: [takes Suresh’s book] Ooooh, what a great American novel! [reads title of novel] He wants to be American!
Suresh: [this should be done in typical melodramatic Bollywood style, completely unrealistic as though the gangsters have disappeared when Suresh begins his monologue, perhaps sappy music in the background] I have only been here a few months, and already I remember my parents’ words. I thought I would have so much money, but [looks down at clothes] I have just what I brought and what I earn, I barely survive on. Me, want to be an American! Hardly! I just want to find a true friend in this world. [mock crying?] Just a true friend!
AG 1: Stop crying! Shut up and give us your money.
Scene 3Narrator: News of Suresh’s encounter with the gangsters spreads around his campus. Sarah, an American girl, is sympathetic and uses the opportunity to confess her love for Suresh.
Suresh, again sitting outside reading. Sarah approaches him.Sarah: I heard what happened to you. It’s no matter, you are ok and your studies are still going well. How are you?
Suresh: The car’s going [Hindi expression for I’m surviving]. How are you, Sarah?
[pause, dramatic music]
Sarah: How am I? How can I answer what my heart cannot speak? Oh Suresh, Suresh! Have you not seen how much I love you? Can you never return these feelings?
Suresh: Sarah! Sarah! I love you! I have looked for a friend in the world, someone to love, and here you are. At last! [laughs crazy with happiness] How strange the world is. How good the world is. [turns to Sarah] But I return to India in mere months. What will become of us then.
Sarah: I will come with you. I will never leave you.
Scene 4Narrator: Suresh returns to India. He meets his parents, keeping Sarah outside the room until he tells her it is ok to come in and meet his father and mother. First he wants to have some words with them himself. Suresh’s aunt (mother’s sister) and older sister Sangeeta also take part in the family conversation.
Suresh: Hello, Mother. Hello, Father.
Father and Mother:
Father: How was school, son? How is your health?
Suresh: School was good, I am fine….but there is something more important now….
Aunt: Yes Suresh…of course, we will consider your opinion in choosing the girl.
Suresh: Actually….
Suresh: Well….
Father: What about it, son? You need a wife to keep you out of trouble.
Suresh: Please, listen to me. I have already found someone I want to be with, maybe always. [shocked silence] In fact I have brought her here.
Father: Here?
Aunt: Here?
Suresh: [calls out] Chotu, please bring her now.
[Chotu brings in Sarah. Stunned silence]
Father: Who is this? An...an...American?!
Suresh: This is Sarah. Yes, American....she is…my girlfriend.
Father: Enough! [Bas jii, bahut ho gayaa] Because of you our family will be shamed!
Aunt: Calm down. Everyone. As long as they are really in love, no harm can come to them from anyone.
Father: You approve of this…this….this thing?
Sarah: Please, I mean no harm…
Suresh: I left home a gunda. I come home a patient and understanding, loving man. I know that money and image are not everything. Please accept this girl. She is my best friend.
Father: I am speechless…
Mother:
Father: Perhaps, son, you have learned to want love instead of money. This is an extraordinary thing you have done. You have our blessing.
Aunt: Let’s celebrate! Who knows what the future may hold for these two bright stars.
